The Ugly Canadians

Socialist nationalism producing a nation of ignoramuses

Historically socialism has never given birth to a vibrant and intelligent culture. Socialism does however produce a very good rewriting of history, national-socialist fantasies that keep the population smug and happy, and politicians and unions expert in spending and wasting other people’s money. It also produces populations that are largely ignorant of reality, steeped in mythology and fantasy and every bit as rude, crude and ugly as the prototypical track suit wearing American visiting European tourist sites and comparing them to Disney World. There is no glory in communal ugliness.

The Ugly Canadian is a derivative of ugly socialism and the disfiguring influence of large government. With nothing else to unify a country the Ugly Canadian relies on the tired nationalist-socialist rants of big government, the left wing media, caring Marxism, universal programs of all varieties [baby care now coming soon], and of course the class transcending emotional appeal of anti-Americanism and anti-Semiticism. Nothing unifies a socialist country like good old fashioned racism. Creating myths, establishing fantastical tribal superiorities, and demanding cult support is as old as the welfare based policies of Hitler’s Germany or the fantasy ideology of Stalin, Mao, Castro or Old Europe.

Canadians pride themselves on their caring socialism, their internationalism and open multicultural society. The Canadian mosaic is deemed by Canadians and their political-media elite to be superior to the American melting pot model. Not having a national culture, is according to Canadians, superior to US styled nationalism and pride. Not for the Canadians the display of national pride! As with most socialist fantasies none of the dear attributes held by Canadians to elevate themselves above their US competitors makes any sense. In fact it is breeding a country of soft racists and intellectual boors.

The intellectual boor which is the typical Canadian, believes in the fantasy that big government is good government and there is no need to debate this issue. Thus any welfare or social program that uses the words; love, care, equality, national values, environment, children, investment, education or commitment, will receive automatic approval. Whole sectors of economic life ranging from socialized health care, to native Indian transfers, to education, transportation, banking, farming, fishing, timber processing, and beyond, are protected or managed by big government. The boorish Canadian never debates their reforms, has no interest in freeing his society from the control of fantasy policy, nor does he have enough time or energy to much care about the implications of supporting big brother’s power grab.

So what is the result of the Ugly Canadians policy choice and support of big government, high taxes, and massive socialist spending?

• GDP per capita that is below all 50 US states
• $172.000 in debt for each person
• Standards of Living 30 % below US levels [see Roger Martin U of T study dec. 2005]
• 43 % of the economy under government control and growing
• Highest marginal tax rates in the West with the 2nd highest taxes on business in the world
• No internal free trade
• Quebec separatism which takes in $40 billion in transfers per annum
• No military
• No weight in foreign affairs
• Free riding of the US military and health care sectors
• Massive anti-US rhetoric to justify the above

It is a sad spectacle. Canada is an old nation state – dating from 1867 and older than many of the nation states of Europe. It should have more common sense. Following European socialism leads inevitably to wealth destruction, social problems [Quebec in Canada, Arabic riots and demands for Sharia in Europe], poor immigration policy, and a crass ignorance of the outside world and the flows of history and politics. Contrary to their propaganda the vast majority of Canadians are as ignorant of the outside world as is the average European or average American. How many Canadians can name the two capitals of Europe, the total size of the US economy, the Premier of China, the governor of Illinois [a state with a larger GDP than Canada], the new Iraqi President; or how many know that the US has the largest number of theatres, book stores, opera houses, museums and books read per capita in the entire world? How about close to zero.

As with all socialist states fantasy replaces reality. Ignorance becomes knowledge. Racism is transformed into national greatness. Lies become the truth. Hypocrisy and nonsense change into intelligence and cunning.

So the great myth sustains itself, growing in strength and energy as governments cook up more ways to steal money, control people, regulate and tax the efforts of others. Groups and classes are erased through cheap propaganda, racism and mythology making into a great mass of socialized ignorants. The Ugly Canadian will tell you that there is no nationalism inside a socialist land. He is right. It is actually worse than that – it is called national-socialism – a cheap replacement for real culture, and a real nation state.
